Welding Class

We had our welding class Wednesday and today and we learned a lot of things. Katie, my roommate, and I got to work on picnic tables. Above Katie is grinding the edges of welds and cuts so they don't get caught on your clothing or you cut yourself on them. Above I am using the most fun piece of equipment that we used. It was actually a little scary at first to be handling the torch welder after he told us all these stories about it. Not to mention that it's a ginormous flame... But I caught on pretty fast and though I didn't cut very straight it was a lot of fun. But I then cut it later with the chop saw ish sort of thing. I forget what it was called, but it cut a lot straighter.

Above, I'm using the stick welder. It's the kind of welder that we'd probably have on the field. The hardest part was puting the stick about where you wanted it and then flicking your helmet down and trying to stick the stick onto the metal without being able to see because the helmet is so dark. I actually did a pretty good job for my first time. Yep, Katie and I are pretty much experts now.... hmmm... I think my nose is getting longer.
Gotta love the welding masks. Below is Katie and Hank, our expert construction man who heads up the building of all the new housing.

One for the Camera

Winter's Furious Comeback

Snow in April?! Yes, believe it! Yesterday everything was entirely covered.

Practical Training Class

Have you been out to rake your rocks yet? Here, in the fall we rake leaves, and in the spring we rake rocks. In the winter, the snow blower blows the rocks from our dirt roads onto the grass so when the snow melts, the grass is all covered in rocks. That kind of raking really wears your arms out.
Diana and I had the joy, nay the privilege of this great task.

We also just finished a small engines class. Diana and I were partnered together in fixing this lawn mower. It had been sitting out in the pole barn, underwater so we had our work cut out for us with the gas tank full of water and sand. We took it apart, cleaned it and inspected the five main things on small engines: the air filter, spark plug, oil, fuel, and compression. It was a lot of fun.

Spring Break

While staying with my grandparents over Spring Break, I got to visit with some friends.

Spring Break

I'm off on Spring Break this week and had the privilege of getting to visit my great grandmother yesterday who just turned 94. Plans for this week include a trip to the dentist, visit with old friends and a meeting with the missions committee. Then I'm off to Michigan for the weekend before starting back into school on Monday.

Afraid? Of What?

Afraid? Of what?
To feel the spirit's glad release?
To pass from pain to perfect peace,
The strife and strain of life to cease?
Afraid? Of that?

Afraid? Of what?
Afraid to see the Saviour's face,
To hear His welcome, and to trace,
The glory gleam from wounds of grace,
Afraid? Of that?

Afraid? Of what?
A flash - a crash - a pierced heart;
Brief darkness - Light - O Heaven's art!
A wound of His a counterpart!
Afraid? Of that?
Afraid? Of what?
To enter into Heaven's rest,
And yet to serve the Master blessed?
From service good to service best?
Afraid? Of that?

Afraid? Of what?
To do by death what life could not -
Baptize with blood a stony plot,
Till souls shall blossom from the spot?
Afraid? Of that?

This poem was written by E.H. Hamiliton, after hearing of the death of his
missionary collegue Jack Vinson. Vinson was martyred in 1931 and showed
no fear of death to his Chinese captors, telling them, "Kill me, if you wish. I
will go straight to God."
